Rahr Unmalted White Wheat for Raw Wheat Character, Body, and Haze
Rahr Unmalted White Wheat is a useful ingredient when brewers want the grainier, more rustic effect that raw wheat can bring to a beer. It is especially relevant in witbier, hazy IPA, saison, and other recipes where body, haze, and a fresher wheat impression are part of the target rather than something to avoid.
Because it is unmalted, it is normally used alongside well-modified base malt that can help with conversion. That makes it a more intentional ingredient than malted wheat, but in the right recipe it can add a kind of texture and raw grain character that is hard to replace with malt alone.
Why Brewers Use Unmalted White Wheat
- Body: Helps build fuller texture and palate weight
- Appearance: Supports haze in styles that benefit from it
- Character: Adds a fresher grainy wheat note rather than a finished malt impression
Best Fits
Unmalted white wheat is especially useful in witbier, farmhouse-style beer, and hazy IPA recipes where brewers want texture and grain expression. It can also help shape recipes that need more protein-driven body and haze stability. If the goal is a rawer, more rustic wheat contribution, this is often the right tool.
For brewers who want a more traditional raw-wheat option for modern haze or classic witbier character, Rahr Unmalted White Wheat is a very workable choice.
