How to Order Grain (Visual Guide)

This guide maps to the colored boxes on the product page: Red = Milling, Blue = Recipe Selection, Green = Unit of Measure. Follow the steps below for a clean, accurate order every time.

Red Box — Milling (Is milling required?)

Check “Yes, please mill my grain” if you want us to mill it. We mill on a Spike 3-roller grain mill for a consistent, repeatable crush—fine enough for solid extraction, yet coarse enough to avoid stuck sparges in typical homebrew systems. If you prefer a unique crush (finer/coarser), add those details in the “Special Instructions” text box in the Shopping Cart.

Blue Box — Recipe Selection (Which grain bill is this for?)

The default is Keep Separate to prevent accidental mixing, but we encourage selecting Recipe 1, Recipe 2, or Recipe 3. When you choose a recipe number, we’ll combine all grains assigned to that number into one labeled bag. This reduces plastic use, keeps clutter down, and helps us fill orders more efficiently. Example: if you want dark grains kept apart from your base malt, assign dark grains to Recipe 2 instead of leaving each one on “Keep Separate.”

Green Box — Unit of Measure

The default is Ounces. We sell grain in precise 1 oz increments so you can buy exactly what your recipe needs—no leftovers to go stale. We weigh on highly accurate scales to the decimal point with a typical tolerance of +0.08 oz (usually less than seven kernels). If you need a full sack, select the 50 lb or 55 lb bulk option in the same dropdown. Most homebrewers will leave this set to Ounces.

Conversion examples: 9.25 lb = 148 oz or 9 lb 4 oz = 148 oz (see the conversion chart at the bottom of this page to assist with weight conversions). As a simple reminder, there are 16 oz per 1 lb.

Step-by-Step: Build Your Grain Bill

Step 1 — Milling

Select whether milling is required. Check the box if you want us to mill; leave it unchecked if you’ll mill at home.

Step 2 — Assign a Recipe #

Select Recipe 1 (single recipe orders), or use Recipe 1/2/3 to group grains into up to three combined bags. Use “Keep Separate” only when you truly want an individual variety bagged on its own.

Step 3 — Unit of Measure

Leave this at Ounces for most orders. Switch to 50 lb or 55 lb only when buying a full sack.

Step 4 — Quantity

Enter the amount you need. 16 oz = 1 lb (e.g., 16 oz for 1 lb, 24 oz for 1.5 lb). We will never send sixteen 1-oz bags—grains are combined by your selected Recipe # into a single labeled bag.

Step 5 — Add to Cart & Review

Click Add to Cart. In the Shopping Cart, review milling, recipe number, and quantity for each item. Use the “Special Instructions” box for any notes (e.g., “Recipe 2: coarser crush,” “Keep Chocolate Malt separate,” “Split 12 oz to #1 and 4 oz to #3”). We read every note and do our best to accommodate.
