Weyermann® CARAFA® Special Type 1 for Smooth Roast with Less Harshness
Weyermann® CARAFA® Special Type 1 is the dehusked version of CARAFA®, designed for brewers who want dark color and roasted complexity with a cleaner, smoother finish. By removing much of the husk before roasting, this malt helps reduce some of the sharper bitterness and astringency that can come with standard roasted grains.
That makes it especially useful in schwarzbier, porter, dark lager, and other recipes where the beer should stay polished and drinkable rather than turning rough around the edges. It is a strong option when color matters, roast should be present, and the finish still needs to stay comparatively soft.
Why Brewers Choose the Special Version
- Smoother roast: Coffee and cocoa notes with less harsh bite
- Dark color: Useful for deep brown to black beers
- Cleaner finish: A good fit when standard roasted grains feel too sharp for the style
Best Uses
CARAFA® Special Type 1 works well in dark lagers, schwarzbier, porter, and stouts where brewers want roast to support the beer rather than dominate it. It can also be useful when the goal is to increase color with less bitterness than more aggressive roasted options tend to bring.
If you want a dark malt that stays smoother and more controlled in the finished beer, Weyermann® CARAFA® Special Type 1 is often the better pick than a harsher standard roasted grain.
