Hop & Grain Filtering
Hop and Grain Filtering Tools for Brewing
Hop and grain filtering tools help brewers manage loose hops, grain, fruit, spices, and other additions during the mash, boil, whirlpool, transfer, or fermentation. The goal is not to strip character from the beer. It is to make cleanup easier, reduce loose material where it causes problems, and keep the process more controlled.
Choose the filter around the job. A hop spider can keep heavy kettle additions contained during the boil. Fine mesh bags or filter socks are useful for small additions, dry hopping, fruit handling, or keeping loose plant material out of transfer paths. Brew-in-a-bag systems need a bag sized for the kettle and grain bill, with enough strength and drainage for the process.
Match the filter to the brewing step
- Mash: use brew bags or grain bags when the grain needs to drain cleanly without tearing or compacting.
- Boil and whirlpool: use hop spiders or mesh bags to contain hop matter while still letting wort move through.
- Dry hopping and additions: use bags or filter socks when loose hops, fruit, oak, or spices would make transfers harder.
- Transfers: reduce loose solids before packaging, especially when working with pumps, bottling gear, or kegs.
