Hop and Grain Bags for Steeping, Boiling, and Cleanup

Hop and grain bags make it easier to contain loose ingredients during a brew day. Brewers use them for steeping specialty grains, containing hop additions, holding spices, managing fruit or botanicals, and reducing loose material in the kettle or fermenter.

Choose the bag around the ingredient, vessel, and process step. Fine material may need tighter containment, while larger grain or hop additions need enough room for liquid to move through the bag. Avoid packing bags so tightly that wort, must, or tea cannot circulate.

Common uses for brewing bags

  • Steeping grains: keep specialty grains contained during extract or partial-mash brew days.
  • Hop additions: contain hops in the kettle or fermenter when easier removal is useful.
  • Spices and adjuncts: hold small additions that would otherwise scatter through the batch.
  • Cleanup: reduce loose plant matter or grain debris in kettles, buckets, and fermenters.
