Childhood Trauma West Coast IPA Extract Recipe Kit | 5 Gallons
Childhood Trauma is a bright, dry-finishing new-school West Coast IPA built around firm bitterness and punchy Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hop character. This extract with grains version keeps the beer pale, crisp, and hop-forward while making the brew day more approachable than the all-grain version.

Grain Milling

Fermentation Requirements
Ferment with SafAle US-05 around 64–68°F for the cleanest IPA profile. Dry hop around day 3, keep oxygen exposure low, and package only after gravity is stable and the beer tastes clean.

- Briess Carapils® Dextrin Malt: 1 lb, crushed for steeping
- Powdered Dextrose / Corn Sugar: 1 lb

Flavor and Brewing Character
Expect a pale, crisp West Coast IPA with firm bitterness, a dry finish, and expressive citrus, berry, pine, resin, and tropical hop aroma. Dextrose helps keep the finish lean while the specialty grain supports head retention without making the beer sweet.
Brewing Notes
- Steep the Carapils: Hold around 150–158°F for 20 minutes before the boil.
- Add extract off heat: This helps prevent scorching.
- Whirlpool at 170°F: Hold Citra and Mosaic near 170°F for 15 minutes to build aroma without harsh bitterness.
- Dry hop gently: Add hops around day 3 and avoid splashing.
- Drink fresh: Hop-forward IPAs are best when the aroma is still bright.
