Weyermann® CARAMUNICH® Type 3 Malt for Darker Caramel Intensity
Weyermann® CARAMUNICH® Type 3 is a darker, richer caramel malt for brewers who want more color and caramel depth than Type 1 provides. It is useful when a recipe needs a stronger chestnut-to-dark amber tone, a more assertive malt center, and a fuller, sweeter caramel impression.
This makes it a natural fit for doppelbock, brown ale, darker amber lagers, and stronger malt-forward styles where caramel intensity is supposed to be part of the beer’s identity. It can also help push a grain bill toward a more developed, winter-beer style malt profile without relying on roast.
What It Adds
- Flavor: Richer caramel, toast, and deeper malt sweetness than lighter caramel malts
- Color: Darker amber to chestnut tones
- Body: Helps make the beer feel broader and more layered
Why Use Type 3 Instead of Type 1
Type 3 is the better choice when you want caramel character to play a bigger role rather than just adding support. It brings more depth and more obvious color, which can make a big difference in recipes that otherwise feel too pale, too lean, or not malt-driven enough.
If you are building a stronger amber or dark malt-forward beer and need more decisive caramel presence, Weyermann® CARAMUNICH® Type 3 is the stronger option.
