Clean, Light Base Malt for Crisp Lagers and Pale Ales
Low Color, High Extract – Ideal for Pilsners, Kölsch, and Session Beers
Briess Pilsen Malt, also referred to as Pilsner Malt, is an exceptionally light and clean American base malt produced from 2-row barley. Kilned to a very pale color of just 1.2° Lovibond, it contributes a delicate malt backbone without overshadowing hops or specialty grains. This malt offers high extract potential and excellent enzymatic power, making it ideal for both traditional lagers and hop-forward modern styles.
Flavor and Aroma Profile
Expect a clean, sweet graininess with subtle notes of honey, raw cereal, and fresh malt. Briess Pilsen Malt is prized for its neutral flavor contribution and excellent clarity, allowing brewers to showcase hops, yeast, or specialty malt character with precision.
Typical Usage
This malt can make up 100% of the grain bill and is commonly used in Pilsners, Kölsch, American lagers, cream ales, pale ales, and blonde ales. Its low color and high diastatic power also make it a versatile base for mixed grain bills, especially when brewing light or delicate beers that require a neutral malt foundation.
