Weyermann® CARAFA® Type 3 Malt for Bold Roast and Near-Black Color
Weyermann® CARAFA® Type 3 is the more intense end of the CARAFA® family, built for brewers who need serious color and a much stronger roasted signature. It is a useful choice when dark malt needs to be clearly noticeable in the aroma, flavor, and finish rather than acting as a quiet supporting grain.
This malt fits especially well in imperial stout, Baltic porter, robust porter, and other big dark beers where deep color and clear roasted structure are part of the beer’s identity. It can also be used in smaller amounts when you need to push color decisively without relying on large charges of several different dark malts.
What It Adds
- Flavor: More assertive roast, coffee, dark chocolate, and firmer bitterness
- Color: Very strong darkening power for black and near-black beers
- Role: Helps shape beers where darker malt needs to be obvious and intentional
When to Reach for Type 3
Choose CARAFA® Type 3 when Type 1 or lighter dark grains do not go far enough. It is especially useful when you want a beer to read unmistakably dark in both appearance and flavor. Used carefully, it can give a beer the roast intensity it needs without requiring the entire grist to be rebuilt around multiple specialty malts.
For brewers who want a more forceful dark malt contribution with real color impact, Weyermann® CARAFA® Type 3 is the stronger tool.
