Rice Hulls for Brewing
Rice hulls are a simple, flavor-neutral brewing aid that helps improve wort flow through the mash bed. They do not add fermentables, flavor, or color. Their job is purely mechanical: they create structure in the grain bed so runoff stays more open and less likely to compact.
They are especially helpful when you are brewing with high percentages of wheat, rye, oats, flaked grains, or finely crushed malt. If you have ever dealt with a slow runoff or a stuck sparge, rice hulls are one of the easiest fixes to keep on hand.
When to use rice hulls
- Wheat beers, rye beers, and oat-heavy recipes
- NEIPAs and hazy styles with a gummy grain bill
- Adjunct-heavy mashes using flaked corn, flaked wheat, or flaked oats
- Any system that tends to run slowly during lautering
What to expect
- Better drainage: Helps keep the grain bed more open.
- Less compaction: Useful for sticky or husk-poor grists.
- No flavor impact: Rice hulls are used for process improvement only.
Brewer's tip
Mix rice hulls evenly into the dry grist before dough-in so they are distributed throughout the mash. They pair especially well with flaked oats, flaked corn, and flaked white wheat.
