Crisp Crystal 77°L Malt – Rich Caramel Malt for Depth, Color, and Body

Deep caramel sweetness, dark fruit character, and warm amber color for malt-forward beers

Crisp Crystal 77°L Malt is a flavorful English crystal malt that adds deeper caramel notes, fuller body, and rich amber-to-reddish color to a wide range of beer styles. It is an excellent choice for brewers looking to build more malt complexity into recipes without overwhelming the base malt character.

This specialty malt is especially well suited for traditional English styles and other beers that benefit from layered malt flavor. In the finished beer, Crisp Crystal 77°L contributes bold caramel character along with subtle notes of dark fruit and a lightly toasted richness that helps round out the palate.

What Crisp Crystal 77°L Malt Adds to Beer

  • Flavor Contribution: Adds rich caramel malt flavor with deeper notes of toffee, dark fruit, and a mild roasted complexity.
  • Color Contribution: Helps create a deeper amber, copper, or reddish-brown hue depending on recipe design and usage rate.
  • Body & Mouthfeel: Contributes fullness, malt depth, and a smoother overall impression in the finished beer.
  • Usage Rate: Commonly used in smaller percentages of the grain bill, with usage up to 10% depending on the beer style and desired intensity.

Ideal Beer Styles for Crisp Crystal 77°L Malt

This malt is a great fit for recipes where richer crystal malt character is desired. It works particularly well in English-inspired and malt-driven styles where caramel depth and color are part of the beer’s identity.

  • Best Bitters: Adds depth, color, and a fuller malt backbone.
  • Milds: Enhances traditional dark caramel character and supports a rich finish.
  • Porters: Builds malt complexity and complements darker specialty grains.
  • Malt-Forward Ales: Useful in amber ales, brown ales, and other recipes that benefit from added sweetness and body.

How to Use Crisp Crystal 77°L Malt

Crisp Crystal 77°L Malt is best used as a specialty malt alongside a quality base malt. Even at modest percentages, it can make a noticeable impact on flavor, body, and color. Lower usage rates can provide subtle caramel support, while heavier additions can push the beer toward a richer, darker, more toffee-driven profile.

Because crystal malts are used for flavor, body, and color rather than enzymatic power, they are typically included as part of a balanced grain bill rather than used as a primary malt. This makes Crisp Crystal 77°L a great tool for recipe fine-tuning when you want more malt richness and a more layered finished beer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer grain milling services?

Yes, we provide grain milling services free of charge before shipping. To have your grain milled, please select the "Yes, please mill my grain" option on each grain product before adding it to your cart. We use a high-end, 3-roller mill from Spike, set to a standard gap of 4.5, which achieves optimal cracking while minimizing excessive flour. If you prefer a coarser or finer mill, leave a note in the shopping cart, and we’ll adjust it to your preference.

If we notice that most grains were selected for milling but a few were not, we will assume it was an oversight and mill all of them. If your intention is different, please clarify in the shopping cart notes section.

How do you ensure accuracy when weighing grains?

We take great care to ensure that you receive the correct grains in the exact quantities needed for your recipe. Our multi-step process ensures precision, starting with weighing each grain type individually to an accuracy of 0.08 ounces. After that, we perform a final check by weighing the combined total to confirm accuracy. Your total grain weight will always be slightly over the ordered amount, never under, and always within an acceptable range for even the most detail-oriented brewers (like ourselves).

How are grains packaged before shipment?

We provide a convenient recipe-building tool to streamline the process for you, our team, and the environment. We encourage you to use this tool to build your recipes, ensuring you get exactly what you’ve ordered in the correct quantities. By combining all the grains for a single recipe into one bag, we help speed up your brew day, reduce packaging waste, and save time during order fulfillment. Rest assured, we prioritize accuracy when measuring and packing your grains.
