Whitbread Ale Yeast | Wyeast 1099 Yeast
This yeast is 40% off because it’s within at least one month of its best by date. We never ship expired yeast, but it may arrive near or just past that date. In our own lab tests, we've seen up to 85% viability beyond the best by date—much better than most calculators predict. It's a smart way to save without compromising your brew.
Wyeast 1099 Whitbread Ale Yeast
Wyeast 1099 Whitbread Ale is a liquid English ale yeast strain for brewers who want a mildly malty, slightly fruity fermentation profile with good clearing behavior. Wyeast describes it as less tart and dry than Wyeast 1098 British Ale, with flocculation that helps beer clear well without filtration.
This strain is a strong fit for balanced British-style ales where malt character, drinkability, and moderate fruitiness matter more than aggressive yeast expression. At lower fermentation temperatures, Wyeast notes that 1099 can produce a cleaner finish with a very low ester profile.
Fermentation Profile
- Species: Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
- Temperature range: 64-75°F (18-24°C), according to Wyeast.
- Apparent attenuation: 68-72%.
- Flocculation: Medium High.
- Apparent ABV tolerance: 10%.
Best Beer Styles
Wyeast recommends 1099 for ordinary bitter, best bitter, strong bitter, English IPA, British brown ale, and sweet stout. Use it when the recipe needs a classic English fermentation profile without turning overly dry, sharp, or ester-heavy.
Handling and Shipping Notes
Liquid yeast is temperature-sensitive. Store cold until brew day and make a starter or pitch-rate adjustment when the pack age, wort gravity, or batch size calls for it. For shipped liquid yeast during warm weather, add an ice pack and choose the fastest practical shipping option.
