Golden State Common All-grain Recipe Kit for California Common Character

Golden State Common is a California Common-style beer inspired by the steam-beer tradition associated with San Francisco brewing history. The style sits in a unique place: lager yeast character fermented warmer than a classic lager, firm malt, woody-minty Northern Brewer hop character, and an amber finish that feels distinctly West Coast.

This all-grain kit is for brewers who want a beer with history, balance, and everyday drinkability. Expect toasted malt, light caramel, restrained fruitiness, firm hop balance, and a clean-enough finish to make the beer satisfying without becoming heavy.

This is the all-grain version. If you want the extract format for a different brew day, see the companion listing: Golden State Common | Extract Recipe Kit | 5 Gallons.

Grain Milling

Flavor and Brewing Character

Expect copper color, toasted bread, light caramel, firm bitterness, and Northern Brewer hop character that reads woody, herbal, and faintly minty. The beer should finish clean and moderately dry.

Liquid yeast shipping protection is included. This kit includes 24-hour yeast shipping protection with an insulated mailer and 8 oz ice pack. Refrigerate the yeast promptly when it arrives.

Fermentation Requirements

  • Recommended fermentation range: 58–64°F with California lager yeast or clean hybrid yeast.
  • Pitch healthy yeast into fully chilled wort; do not pitch into hot wort.
  • Use gravity readings, not airlock activity alone, to confirm fermentation is complete.
  • Package only after gravity is stable and the beer tastes clean for the style.

  • Vienna Malt: 24 Ounces
  • Crystal 60L Malt: 8 Ounces

Why Brewers Choose This Kit

This kit offers a locally relevant West Coast classic that sits between ale and lager process. It is a strong option for brewers with moderate temperature control who want something with history and character.

Brewing Notes

  • Default grain handling: included grain is milled by default and packed together unless a listing or order note says otherwise.
  • Ferment cooler than a typical American ale if your yeast allows.
  • Avoid excessive crystal malt sweetness; the beer should finish balanced.
  • A little cold conditioning helps smooth the finish.
