Demerara Sugar for Brewing – 1 lb & 5 lb Bags
Demerara cane sugar for brewing
Demerara sugar is a coarse, golden-amber cane sugar with a light caramel and molasses character. Use it when a recipe calls for Demerara or when a subtle dark-sugar note fits the batch better than plain white sugar.
What it adds
- Fermentable sugar: useful for increasing gravity in beer, cider, mead, and other beverage fermentations.
- Flavor: a light caramel and molasses note from the sugar's retained cane character.
- Recipe flexibility: a natural fit for English and Belgian-inspired ales, darker beer, cider, mead, and specialty recipes.
How to use Demerara sugar
Follow your recipe for the amount and timing. For beer, dissolve the coarse crystals completely in hot wort near the end of the boil, or dissolve them separately in boiled water before a later addition. When Demerara replaces part of the malt fermentables, it can help produce a drier, lighter-bodied result. When added on top of an existing recipe, it mainly raises original gravity and potential alcohol.
Demerara has more flavor than plain white sugar, so it is not a neutral substitute in every recipe. Start with a recipe designed for dark or specialty sugar when you want predictable results.
Available sizes
- 1 lb bag: practical for a single batch or recipe.
- 5 lb bag: economical for repeat brewing and larger batches.
Storage
Keep the bag sealed in a cool, dry place. Protect it from moisture to prevent clumping.
