CellarScience® SilaFine | Beer Fining Agent for Crystal Clear Beer
CellarScience SilaFine Beer Fining Agent
CellarScience SilaFine is a vegan-friendly silica sol fining agent for clearing finished beer and improving settling. It helps pull yeast, haze-active proteins, and polyphenols out of suspension without targeting foam-active proteins, so it can brighten beer without flattening head retention.
Use SilaFine when beer is finished but still hazy from suspended yeast or chill-haze material, especially before transferring to a keg, brite tank, or package. It is a practical alternative when you want clearer beer without relying on filtration.
How SilaFine works
- Fining type: negatively charged silica sol made from amorphous silicon dioxide.
- Best fit: finished beer, cold-side clarification, unitanks, brite tanks, and optional whirlpool use.
- Beer quality: designed to remove haze-forming particles and yeast while leaving foam-active proteins alone.
- Diet and process fit: vegan friendly, allergen free, GMO free, and Reinheitsgebot compliant according to CellarScience.
How to use it
For finished beer, add 10 ml per 5 gallons. Gently rouse or circulate the beer to disperse the fining evenly. SilaFine can drop yeast at fermentation temperature, but CellarScience recommends using it below 39°F for full effectiveness against haze-forming particles. If the beer is still hazy after 24 hours, a second dose can be added.
In a brite tank, add SilaFine inline while transferring from fermenter to brite. In a unitank, add it from the top and rouse with CO2 from the bottom for 5-10 minutes, or recirculate with a pump loop. At ideal cold temperatures with good dispersion, clarification can take as little as 8-12 hours; otherwise allow up to 48 hours before judging the result.
Whirlpool and storage notes
SilaFine may also be used in the whirlpool at 0.5-1 ml per gallon to encourage faster, more compact kettle sedimentation. Do not exceed the recommended rate: overdosing can temporarily increase haze and lengthen settling time.
Store SilaFine cool and away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not freeze. After opening, CellarScience lists a recommended shelf life of 12 months.
