Briess Blonde RoastOat™ Malt – Cozy Toasted Oat Flavor & Enhanced Mouthfeel
Specialty Malted and Roasted Oats That Add Creamy Body and Warm Grain Notes
Blonde RoastOat™ Malt from Briess is a unique malted and roasted oat grain with a gentle golden hue (~6 °Lovibond) and subtle toasty sweetness. It adds creamy body, enhanced mouthfeel, and a pleasantly nutty, cereal-like flavor—perfect for beers that benefit from soft richness and complexity. Produced in the U.S.A. and carefully roasted to a mild level, this specialty malt blends seamlessly into a variety of styles.
Suggested Usage Levels:
- 10% addition delivers a light blonde hue and mild cereal aroma with subtle toast.
- 20% addition offers deeper blonde color and creamy mouthfeel with toasty oat notes.
- 30% addition creates a warm golden tone, a dominant toasted oat aroma, and fuller body.
Flavor & Appearance:
- Color: Approximately 6 °Lovibond (light golden to yellow hue)
- Flavor Profile: Light roasted oats, mild sweetness, grainy/nutty aromas, wholesome cereal character
- Extract Yield: Approximately 75% (dry basis)
- Diastatic Power: None (0 Lintner)—must be mashed with diastatic base malt
Applications & Styles:
Ideal in NEIPAs, oatmeal stouts, Scotch ales, brown ales, and any recipe that benefits from added body and roundness. It thrives in haze-forward ales or malt-focused beers where softness and texture are key.
Usage Notes:
This is whole-kernel malt—**it must be milled prior to mashing**. Since the kernels are thinner than barley, it helps to loosen your mill spacing slightly to avoid powder overload or stuck mash.
Packaging Options:
- By the ounce or pound: Perfect for typical homebrew batches and recipe experimentation.
- 50 lb Bags: Great value for high-volume or frequent brewers—these bags simply offer cost savings, not intended only for professional breweries.
Storage & Shelf Life:
Store in a cool, dry, pest-free environment (≤ 90 °F). Whole-kernel and crushed malt are best used within 6 months of packaging to preserve flavor and freshness.
