Carboy & Jugs
Carboys and Jugs for Fermentation and Small-Batch Brewing
Carboys and jugs are fermentation and storage vessels used for beer, wine, cider, mead, kombucha, fruit wine, and other small-batch beverages. They are useful when you want to ferment, age, clarify, or split a batch into smaller trials.
Choose the vessel by batch size, headspace needs, material, cleaning access, and whether the beverage will foam heavily during active fermentation. Glass is rigid and clear, while PET-style vessels are lighter and easier to move. Wide-mouth options can make cleaning, fruit additions, and dry hopping easier than narrow-neck vessels.
Choosing a carboy or jug
- Batch volume: leave enough headspace for active fermentation, especially with beer, fruit, or warm fermentations.
- Material: match glass or PET to your handling, cleaning, and transfer preferences.
- Closure fit: confirm the stopper, lid, airlock, or blowoff setup before brew day.
- Cleaning access: plan brushes, cleaners, and rinsing around the vessel shape.
