Crown Cellar English Barleywine

English Barleywine is the grand old malt bomb of British brewing: rich, warming, layered, and built for sipping rather than speed. A good one should feel powerful without becoming syrupy, with deep Maris Otter character, toffee, biscuit, dried fruit, marmalade-like malt depth, and enough bitterness to keep the finish structured.

Crown Cellar is designed as a proper cellar-worthy strong ale. The heavy Maris Otter base gives it the bready, nutty depth the style needs, while Crystal 80L, Crystal 120L, and Victory malt stack caramel, raisin, toast, and biscuit. Challenger and East Kent Golding keep the beer balanced instead of sticky.

Why Brew This Kit

This is a brew for patience and payoff. It is excellent young if fermentation is clean, but it is built to improve as the malt, bitterness, and warming alcohol knit together over time.

Companion version: This is the extract with grains version. If you prefer the other brew-day format, see the Crown Cellar English Barleywine all-grain recipe kit.

Grain Milling

We automatically mill the grains included with SoCal Brewing Supply beer recipe kits so they are ready for brew day. If you want the grains left unmilled, please add that request in the shopping cart notes before checkout. We’ll do our best to support unmilled requests when packing your order.

What to Expect

Toffee, biscuit, dried fruit, marmalade, firm bitterness, full body, and warming alcohol that should smooth with conditioning.

Fermentation Requirements

Pitch Nottingham into well-aerated wort around 64–68°F. This is a high-gravity beer; oxygenation and healthy yeast are important. Give the beer time to fully finish and condition before packaging.
