Sweet Mead Yeast | Wyeast 4184
Specialized Mead Strain for Full-Bodied, Sweet Results
Wyeast 4184 Sweet Mead Yeast is a widely used strain for crafting sweet and semi-sweet meads. Known for its lower attenuation compared to wine yeasts, it naturally leaves residual sweetness while still fermenting cleanly and reliably. The result is a mead with a rich body, smooth finish, and balanced honey character that retains some of its natural sugars.
This strain is ideal for traditional sweet meads, melomels, and cysers where brewers want to highlight honey’s natural flavors while ensuring a full, rounded mouthfeel. Because of its moderate alcohol tolerance, fermentation will often stop before all sugars are consumed, helping to maintain sweetness without requiring stabilizing agents.
Key Characteristics:
- Strain Style: Mead Yeast
- Flocculation: Low - Medium
- Attenuation: Low - Moderate (sweet finishes)
- Fermentation Temperature Range: 70°F - 75°F (21°C - 24°C)

Pair with Wyeast Yeast Nutrient
Mead fermentations benefit greatly from nutrients. Use Wyeast Yeast Nutrient to prevent sluggish fermentation, reduce lag time, and support yeast health. Honey alone lacks sufficient nutrients for yeast, so supplementation is essential for strong fermentation performance.
How We Handle and Ship Yeast
At SoCal Brewing Supply, we store all liquid yeast under optimal refrigerated conditions with 24-hour temperature monitoring to maintain freshness and viability. For best results when ordering online, we recommend adding an ice pack to your order.
Note: Ice packs may arrive melted, which is normal. They are designed to reduce temperature shock during shipping and protect yeast during short transit times.
